Coastal Erosion Mapping Using Historical Aerial Photography, Indian Island First Nation, N.B.

A coastal erosion assessment of the Indian Island First Nation (IIFN) Band lands, located in the  Richibucto area of southeast New Brunswick was completed in 2010. Consultation with Band members concerning coastal land loss based on the community’s oral history as well as on-site investigation provided a background for the development of a methodology for the estimation of coastal erosion patterns over time. Ten historical aerial photographs dating from the 1930's to 2001 were geographically registered and subsequently used to map the position of the coastline at each date. Erosion rates and areas of erosion/accretion were calculated for the extent of Coastline included in the Indian Island First Nations land holdings.
