This week’s spotlight features Basil Manam Kunnan, Construction Inspector with DesignPoint Engineering & Surveying Ltd.

Q: How do you use geomatics within your career?
I use geomatics to translate engineering designs into accurate information on the ground. My work has included establishing survey control, construction layout and staking, verifying grades and elevations, conducting topographic and cross-section surveys, supporting pile installation, completing as-built surveys, and processing field data.

I have worked with GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, and software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Trimble Access, and Leica Infinity. Geomatics helps me ensure that construction work is completed accurately and according to the approved design.

Q: How did you get involved with geomatics?
My background is in civil engineering, and I first became interested in geomatics while working with civil drawings and construction-related projects. I wanted to better understand how engineering designs are positioned, measured, and verified in the real world.

That interest led me to complete a Graduate Certificate in Marine Geomatics and a Diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technology at the Centre of Geographic Sciences. Since then, I have applied my civil engineering and geomatics knowledge to construction surveying projects.

Q: What advice would you like to share with a young professional?
Develop both field and office skills. Learning how survey data is collected is just as important as understanding how it is processed and used to support engineering decisions. Ask questions, learn from experienced professionals, and never compromise on accuracy or safety.

Geomatics technology continues to evolve, so remain curious and open to learning new equipment and software. Strong technical skills are valuable, but communication, teamwork, and a willingness to keep learning are equally important.
